In 1955, at Galerie Denise Rene, Paris, Agam participated with Jesus Soto, Pol Bury and Jean Tinguely in the first group exhibition of post-war kinetic art, giving birth to the kinetic movement. Today, Agam is recognized as one of the founders, and the most outstanding representative of kinetic art. Agam has created numerous large-scale public works, including the 197-foot "Jacob's Ladder" mural installed on the foyer ceiling of the National Convention House in Jerusalem and a monumental sculpture at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Among his other monumental works are a two-ton, three-story, gold-colored menorah which is the largest in the world; "The Chabad Freedom Menorah" designed for the West Coast Chabad organization; a transparent mural and Torah Ark for the Park Synagogue in Cleveland, Ohio; monumental sculptures in the Pare Floral, Bois de Vincennes, Paris, as well as at the University of Non, France, and for the Residence of the President of Israel, Jerusalem; mural for the University of Montpellier, France, and stained glass windows for the Hebrew University, New York; major three-dimensional works for Chicago and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN; and a twenty-seven foot mural for the Israeli passenger ship, "Shalom." For the Civic Center in Leverkusen, Germany, Agam designed a visual space which surrounds the viewer on all sides and creates the sensation of walking inside the work of art. Agam's sculpture "Me Gates" is in the garden of the President of Israel's residence, and his sculpture, "18 Levels Maaloth" stands at the entrance to the famed Billy Rose Sculpture Garden in Jerusalem. In 1984, Agam was commissioned to create a major sculpture for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In 1972, Agam was commissioned by the President Georges Pompidou of France to create a whole environmental salon with kinetic ceiling moving transparent-colored doom and a kinetic tapestry on the floor for the Palais de I' Elysee. In 1979, the entire Salon was reinstalled at the Centre National de Georges Pompidou in Paris. Again's "Star of Peace" was created in 1978 to commemorate the historic Israeli-Egyptian peace accord reached by Prime Minister Menachern Begin and President Anwar el-Sadat. This sculpture unites the five-pointed star of Arab and Egyptian nations with the Star of David of the Jewish people. Castings of the work were presented officially to Begin and Sadat in 1978, as well as to President Ronald Reagan in 1981. |
